Source: the reference exchange rates of the European Central Bank (ECB), published for information. IBFX recalculates the cross rates and the other figures from that data. Used for conversions between the 8 major currencies.

Source: Vietcombank, reference rates. Used for conversions involving VND; the full table is on the Vietcombank exchange rate page. Copyright belongs to Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam (Vietcombank).

How it is calculated

Amount you receive = amount × exchange rate × (1 − markup ÷ 100).

  • Between the 8 major currencies (USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, AUD, CAD, CHF, NZD): ECB reference rates. These are mid-market rates with no markup in them; a pair without EUR is crossed through EUR. A bank or a card usually adds a markup or a conversion fee, so put it in the markup field to see what you actually receive.
  • Foreign currency to VND: the Vietcombank transfer buying rate, because the bank is buying your foreign currency. VND to foreign currency: the selling rate, so the amount you get = dong ÷ selling rate. Vietcombank rates already include the bank markup, so only fill in the markup field when there is another fee on top, a card fee for example.
  • Changing cash over a counter uses the cash buying rate, usually lower than the transfer rate; the Vietcombank table above lists all three rates.

Example

100 USD at a rate of 26,000 with a card charging a 2% conversion fee: 100 × 26,000 = 2,600,000 dong; less 2% (52,000 dong) leaves 2,548,000 dong.

The rates here are for reference, not dealing rates: a bank, a card or a broker prices at the moment you convert, and that price can differ from the figures above.
