Gold (XAUUSD) is one of the most heavily traded products at CFD brokers, and also the one that blows up accounts most easily, because the price can move several USD per ounce in a matter of minutes. This article collects the conditions for trading gold at CXM Direct from the Metals product table, the Leverage Policy, the Account Types page and the XAUUSD247 launch announcement on the CXM website, as of Sep 14, 2026, along with the margin and profit-and-loss arithmetic that helps you use leverage more safely.

The XAUUSD specification and the other metals at CXM

From the table on the Precious Metals page of CXM on Sep 14, 2026:

Read again on Sep 25, 2026: CXM has rebuilt the website, and the new Metals page carries only a live price list, not the specification table above. The figures in the table are therefore the Sep 14, 2026 reading; before you place an order, check the symbol specification inside MT4, MT5 or CXM Trader.

How to read it:

  • The spread is in price units. A spread of 0.07 on XAUUSD means the gap between the buying and the selling price is 0.07 USD per ounce; on 1 lot (100 ounces) that is about 7 USD. The table does not say which account type the figure applies to, nor whether it is the minimum spread or the typical spread.
  • The commission is not in the table. The ECN and ZERO accounts may charge one; ask support, or look in the client area, before you choose.
  • Swap: the Account Types page states that no swap is charged; check the swap column in the contract specification (Specification) in MT4/MT5 to be sure for the symbol you trade.
  • The Cent account uses a much smaller cent lot; check the contract specification of the gold symbol on a Cent account for the conversion.

Leverage when you trade gold

The product table gives maximum leverage of 1:2000, but the leverage you actually get also depends on your equity, on your account type and on the time.

By the equity in the account (Leverage Policy, the Forex, gold and silver column):

Account equityMaximum leverage on gold
Up to 10,000 USD1:2000
10,001 – 30,000 USD1:1000
30,001 – 100,000 USD1:500
Over 100,000 USD1:100

By account type: Cent up to 1:2000, ZERO up to 1:1000, FIX API up to 1:300. The Standard and ECN accounts have “unlimited” leverage, which covers gold and silver too, once at least two trades have been made: with a balance up to 500 USD it is 2,000,000:1, and from 501 to 1,000 USD it is 50,000:1. For the detail: Unlimited leverage at CXM Direct.

By the time, for new positions:

  • Roughly 3–5 minutes before and 1 minute after a major news release: 1:200 maximum.
  • Roughly the 10 minutes before the daily session close: 1:100 maximum.
  • The last hour before the market closes on Friday: 1:100 maximum.

Gold reacts sharply to inflation data, to US employment figures and to Fed rate decisions. If you are used to opening large positions on 1:2000 leverage, a position opened close to a news release will need ten times the margin and may not open at all. Follow the “economic calendar” before you trade; see also “11 factors that move the world gold price”.

Margin, P&L and stop out: an XAUUSD example

Suppose gold is at 2,400 USD per ounce. 1 lot = 100 ounces, worth about 240,000 USD. For every 1 USD the gold price moves, 1 lot gains or loses 100 USD, and 0.01 lots gains or loses 1 USD.

Leverage appliedMargin for 1 lotMargin for 0.01 lots
1:2000120 USD1.2 USD
1:500480 USD4.8 USD
1:200 (around news)1,200 USD12 USD
1:100 (end of day, weekend)2,400 USD24 USD

CXM sets margin call at 120% and stop out at 30%. On a 500 USD account with 1 lot of gold open at 1:2000 leverage (120 USD of margin):

  • The price goes against you by about 3.6 USD: a loss of 356 USD, equity down to 144 USD (120% of the margin), and a margin call.
  • The price goes against you by about 4.6 USD: a loss of 464 USD, equity down to 36 USD (30% of the margin), and the position is closed.

A single 5 USD move, which is entirely ordinary for gold, has taken almost the whole account. With “unlimited” leverage the margin is close to zero, so the position runs until the equity is nearly gone; negative balance protection only keeps the account from going below zero.

On the same 500 USD account, open 0.01 lots with the stop loss 10 USD away: if the stop loss is hit you lose 10 USD, which is 2% of the account. Your position size and your stop loss are what decide how much you lose. See the 2% money management rule and “What is a stop loss?”.

XAUUSD247: trading gold at the weekend too

On Jul 22, 2026, CXM launched the XAUUSD247 symbol, which allows gold to be traded 24/7, weekends included. According to the announcement on the CXM website:

  • The symbol works with the Standard, ECN and Cent accounts.
  • The announcement on cxmvn.net says it is on MT5 only, while the international announcement says it is on MT4 and MT5; check the symbol list in the Market Watch of your own account.
  • The FAQ of CXM Trader says that outside normal market hours, only products with a weekend session, such as the 24/7 products, can be traded.

XAUUSD247 is a separate symbol, not the ordinary XAUUSD. Before you use it, you should know:

  • Liquidity is thin at the weekend, so the spread can be far wider than on a weekday; look at the actual spread on the platform before you enter.
  • Weekend news can move the price sharply, and an open position can still be stopped out on Saturday or Sunday while you are not watching.
  • The Leverage Policy page says nothing specific about XAUUSD247; ask support what leverage and what margin apply outside normal hours.

Being able to trade 24/7 does not mean you should trade 24/7. If you cannot watch a position over the weekend, close it or cut the size before you stop for the week.

Trading gold more safely

  1. Work out your position size from your stop loss: position size (lots) = the amount you are willing to lose ÷ (the stop loss distance in USD × 100). For example, willing to lose 10 USD with the stop loss 5 USD away gives a position size of 0.02 lots.
  2. Pick low leverage when you open the account; low leverage is an automatic brake against opening a position that is too big.
  3. Avoid entering right before a big news release, at the session close and at the weekend: those are the moments when CXM cuts leverage and when the gold price tends to jump.
  4. Measure the real spread on XAUUSD on a demo account of the same type at several times of day.
  5. Practice on demo or on a Cent account before you trade gold on an ordinary account. If you do not have an account yet, you can sign up with CXM Direct here and then create a demo account in the client area.

Conclusion

CXM lets you trade gold in 100-ounce lots, with leverage up to 1:2000 (or “unlimited” on a small account), and it has added the XAUUSD247 symbol for trading at the weekend as well. The leverage that makes it attractive is also the biggest risk it carries: with gold, a move of a few USD is enough to take almost the whole account if your position size is too big.

If you want to trade gold at CXM, start on a demo or Cent account, pick low leverage, and set a stop loss on every position. See the CXM Direct account types to pick the right one, then open a CXM Direct account through our referral link and follow the account opening guide.
